The functional definition: A nameserver is a specialized server in the network that provides the final, authoritative answers to DNS requests. When a domain is registered, we or your IT department assign specific nameservers to this domain. These servers hold the so-called “zone file” (DNS zone), in which all routing commands and security certificates of the company are stored.

The primary task of a nameserver can be compared to the work of a digital doorkeeper. It knows at any time which technical resource of your company is accessible under which name.

When a user enters your domain into the browser, the following chain runs in the background within fractions of a second:

  1. The request: The browser queries the global network for the address of your website.
  2. The assignment: The request is forwarded to the nameserver responsible for your domain.
  3. The resolution: The nameserver looks up its zone file and returns the exact IP address of the target server.
  4. The connection: The browser connects directly to the target infrastructure and loads the content.

Without the correct and error-free function of the nameserver, your entire digital infrastructure remains globally invisible to customers, partners, and employees.

A nameserver manages different types of entries to direct data traffic in a targeted manner. The most important types for corporate management are:

  • A record / AAAA record: Points the domain or subdomain to the physical IPv4 or IPv6 address of the web server where your website is stored.
  • MX record (Mail Exchanger): Defines which mail servers handle the email traffic of your brand. Misconfigurations here immediately lead to global email delivery problems.
  • CNAME record: Creates aliases or references from one subdomain to another domain, which is essential when integrating external cloud services (such as CRM systems or HR portals).
  • TXT record: Allows the storage of text information, which is primarily used to verify domain ownership or to implement email security procedures (such as SPF, DKIM, and DMARC).

The selection and configuration of nameservers is not a mere IT side issue, but has a direct impact on the performance, flexibility, and IT security of your company.

To guarantee seamless availability, every domain is always coupled to a cluster of multiple nameservers (at least one primary and one secondary nameserver). If a server temporarily fails due to a local disruption, the system automatically takes over the query via the next redundant nameserver.

Nameservers are among the primary targets of cybercriminals.
