Configure DNS zones

A DNS zone is a distinct part of the domain name space that you manage. You can configure zones to define how the internet routes traffic to your domains and services. The portal provides a central overview to manage all your active and deleted zones.

The Domain Portal supports two types of zones: primary and secondary.

Create a primary DNS zone

You can create a new primary DNS zone. In this mode, you have full control over all entries.

1. Open the STACKIT Domain Portal
2. Select DNS from the side menu.
3. Click the Create DNS zone button.
4. Select the Primary type in the modal.
5. Enter the name of the zone in the DNS zones names field (e.g., your-company.cloud).

   You can enable the Batch Mode toggle to create multiple DNS zones at once.

6. (Optional) Provide an initial set of records in the Enter record values text area.
7. Click Create to activate the zone.

Create a secondary DNS zone

You can create a secondary DNS zone. When using this type of zone, STACKIT acts as a secondary and mirrors the data from your own master nameserver.

1. In the DNS overview, click Create DNS zone.
2. Select the Secondary type.
3. Enter the name of the secondary zone in the DNS zones names field.
4. Provide the primary nameserver IP address of your primary server.
5. Click Create. The system begins mirroring your records.

Manage DNS Zones

Once your zones are created, you can perform the following management actions:

• Update: You can update the Start of Authority (SOA) settings or the IP address of the primary nameserver.
• Bulk Edit: The system supports the mass adjustment of DNS zones, making it easier to apply changes to multiple zones at the same time.
• Delete: You can permanently remove a zone from the system.

Deleting a DNS zone removes it irrevocably from the system.
